Vice chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Bui Xuan Cuong on April 20 received Regional Representative for Asia – Pacific of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF) in Hanoi Edgar Doerig who is making a working visit to the city, VNA reported.

At the meeting, Cuong asked Edgar Doerrig to support the operation of cultural and French teaching centres in the city and at the Institute of Cultural Exchange with France (IDECAF).

He also called for support to activities between the city and French-speaking partners, France, and the community of French-speaking countries in various aspects.

Edgar Doerig, in turn, said that OIF expects to further promote investment and trade activities between France and Vietnam, including HCM City.

Appreciating the potential of the city in cooperation with French-speaking partners, Edgar Doerrig said that, besides the traditional relationship in information technology, both sides will continue to augment cooperation in agricultural production and exports.

Meanwhile, a seminar on French literature is scheduled to take place on April 25 at the National Library of Vietnam in Hanoi as part of activities to mark the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-France diplomacy (1973-2023).

Dr. Tran Van Cong of Hanoi University and Dr. Tran Le Bao Chau of HCM City University of Education will deliver speeches at the event, reported Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV).

The seminar, jointly organised by the National Library of Vietnam and the OIF will introduce the history of French literature as well as the International Francophonie’s Five Continents Award.

The award has been part of the OIF’s project since 2001 and it aims to honour talents in literary who reflect cultural diversity through French literary works across five continents.

The purpose of the event is to introduce French literature in the nation while promoting the French book space which saw cooperation between the National Library of Vietnam and the OIF in the 2019 to 2022 period.

The function will get underway during the Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day 2023 taking place from March 16 to April 30 at the National Library of Vietnam.

In April, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet, on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, hosted a reception in Hanoi for Regional Representative for Asia – Pacific of the OIF Edgar Doerig who came to present his credentials.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs is committed to providing all possible support within its ability for the OIF’s activities, he said.

Speaking highly of the OIF’s role and important contributions to enhancing cooperation and solidarity among the people and governments of French-speaking countries around the world, Viet affirmed that Vietnam always highly evaluates cooperation with the OIF while actively, proactively and responsibly engaging in its activities.

Viet suggested the OIF increase its support for French language teaching in Vietnam, including training in French for Vietnamese military and public security forces who join in United Nations peacekeeping missions. He proposed increasing cultural exchanges and economic cooperation between Vietnamese and Francophone partners, especially in Africa, including through tripartite cooperation model in agriculture.
